Cape Sagres in Portugal's Algarve region was once thought to be the most westerly point of the whole inhabited world. It was also an important shelter for sailors who sought refuge until more favorable winds prevailed.

Cape Sagres was also the location of the legendary Nautical School of Sagres. The legend is that there wasn't actually a "school" there since resources in that area were too scarce to launch a sailing journey from this rocky coast.
